If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, and have a personal goal of obtaining employment and eventually getting off benefits, The Ticket to Work can help you achieve that goal.
The Ticket to Work program was created by the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 to remove many barriers which influence decisions that people with disabilities make about trying to work. The goal of the program is to increase self-sufficiency for Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities. The program matches beneficiaries who want to work and get off cash benefits with Employment Networks (EN’s) which offer programs and support in preparing for employment, finding an appropriate job, and becoming stable and independent in it.
Supported Employment Services include: job development; job placement; job skill training; transportation training, and other support services. Individuals are placed in an integrated work setting in the community, consistent with her/his interests and strengths. The individual is employed by the business. The Choice Group provides ongoing support services through Job Coaches or Vocational Counselors, who typically provide the individual with initial job skill training on an intensive basis for the entire workday. The Job Coach or Vocational Counselor then gradually decreases supports, as the individual becomes more proficient. Optimally, a system of “natural supports” is developed within the workplace and community.
Services are designed for people who may have been planning a career change and just need assistance with a resume. For some, this change may have occurred due to circumstances out of their control, and they may have no idea what career goal is right for them now. They may just need some support in the process.
