Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) for DARS

Students Brainstorming

Responding to the requirements of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (WIOA), and the stated needs of special education teachers, transition coordinators, and pre-employment counselors, the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) developed an array of services to meet the needs of transitioning youth and students.

These services focused on the following areas:

After-School Pathways – this job-readiness club takes place in high-schools during or after-school hours and focuses on the five core areas outlined in the WIOA:

  • Job Exploration Counseling

  • Workplace readiness training to develop social and independent living skills

  • Counseling on Postsecondary Education and Training Opportunities (CPETC)

  • Instruction in self-advocacy

After-School Pathways Work Readiness Training – Similar to the After-School Pathways model, this curriculum focuses solely on Workplace Readiness Training (WRT) to prepare students for work-based learning and community-based work experiences.

  • Individual Work-Based Learning Experiences (WBLE) Exploratory Extension – one-on-one services to explore areas of work including touring employers and jobs and attending informational interviews.

  • Individual Work Experience (WE) Intensive Extension – students are supported in securing appropriate internship, volunteer or paid work experience placements in the community.

  • Individual Work Readiness Travel Training – Highly individualized Work Readiness Training (WRT) services designed to provide one-to-one skill building to develop increased navigation independence in the community for work and school.  Services include travel skills assessments, and the support of students with disabilities in learning to ride public transportation and navigate community resources.

  • Road Trip to Discovery Tours! – group services that provide summer tours of industries and post-secondary institutions.
